I wondered if you knew. I didn't, so sharing. My friend Sandeep Singh tells me that in 1916 (before the Gurdwara Movement), when young men from Panjab were fighting and dying in World War I for the British empire, the British had erected a Clock Tower at what is now the primary entrance to Darbar Sahib.

As you know the Sikhs believe in the idea of God as Akal Purakh - the timeless. The British sought to establish their authority in temporal time by erecting the tower far higher than the two Ramgaria Bungas. The Clock Tower's tall spire could be seen from miles.

Post-Independence, the Sikhs finally tore down the tower. The name Ghanta-Ghar still stays as the name of that entrance.
